ITS OFF TO THE OLYMPICS FOR ASHLEIGH

Growing in leaps and bounds

Carrus-sponsored Senior Protea gymnast, Ashleigh Heldsinger, has grown from strength to strength in the past year and looks set to challenge for an outright qualification to the London Olympic Games of 2012. This will be a dream come true for Ashleigh and all her loyal supporters.

“On behalf of Ashleigh and everyone at JGC, we would like to thank the Carrus Cares sponsorship programme. Without this financial support Ashleigh would not have gained the international experience needed to continue with the great improvements and strides she has made”, says Ilse Laing, head coach and owner of JGC gymnastics.

Not only did Ashleigh place second at the December 2010 SA Cup, she also placed a brilliant 15th at her favourite event, the floor exercise event at the World Cup in Ghent in September 2011.

She is currently working hard preparing for the World Championships due to take place at the beginning of October in Japan. She has been doing exceptionally well and placed first overall at both the Central Gauteng Championships on 17 September and at the Provincial Championships that took place on the 24 September.

Carrus & Sunbake spread warmth in Pretoria North

On a cold and frosty July morning, Carrus Cares teamed up with Sunbake to bring warm relief to the Wolmer community in Pretoria North.

The atmosphere was jovial as the community arrived in droves to find out what Carrus & Sunbake had planned for them. Representatives from the Wolmer neighbourhood groups were also on hand for the event and keen to give a helping hand.

“As an under-privileged community, it is sometimes a struggle just to put food on the table and that’s the reason we teamed up to provide soup and bread to warm the tummies, as well as blankets and grocery packs to the queues of people that arrived to enjoy the day with us”, says Pieter Botes, Operations Manager Carrus Ukhozi.

Carrus also provided beanies to keep the little ones who accompanied their parents nice and toasty as well. “The looks of joy on their little faces really made the day worthwhile and we will definitely be part of initiatives with Sunbake in the near future”, commented Biko Rakwena, Marketing Assistant Carrus Group.

Sunbake

Lourens Kotze, Bakery Manager Sunbake Boerstra, and one of the event’s organizers, said the giveaway is also a chance for people to see our employees in a different light — handing out food and going the extra mile.

Kotze mentioned future initiatives: “We have been granted a large budget from Sunbake aimed at helping as many impoverished people in the national community as possible. Our efforts to contribute positively towards socio economic issues will be approached very aggressively this year and beyond”.

Just further proof that Carrus and Sunbake really do Care for our people and our communities.

Carrus Cares supports Olympic gymnast

It has been an exciting time for Olympic gymnast, Ashleigh Heldsinger, who competed in pre-Olympic trials in June. As part of Carrus Cares’ sponsorship programme, Ashleigh has been supported in her gymnastics endeavours by Carrus and is excelling.

In the recent trials, Ashleigh was placed second in the Senior Olympic category and will probably be selected for the team competing at the World Championships in Japan and World Cup in Belgium.

“We are exceptionally proud of Ashleigh and her remarkable achievements thus far. We also feel proud to be sponsoring her and assisting her in reaching her dreams. We will definitely be cheering from the sidelines or behind our TV sets as she competes in the international events coming up in the year,” says Felicia Venter, Financial Director of Carrus.

Carrus Cares wishes Ashleigh all the best for her upcoming competitions.

Bread for kids at Laerskool Bredell, courtesy of Carrus and Sunbake

Carrus has partnered with Sunbake to provide much-needed bread on a weekly basis to learners at Laerskool Bredell in Pomona, Kempton Park. Pieter Botes, Operations Manager at Carrus Ukhozi and coordinator of the project, says there are many learners who arrive at school hungry and need help.

“Every Thursday morning, I collect the freshly baked bread from Sunbake and deliver it to Petro Jacobs, my colleague, who delivers it to the school. There are close to 700 children who attend the school and many of them come from a very impoverished community,” he says. Carrus has established a close relationship with the school and has initiated various projects through the year to improve the facilities and provide food for the learners.

“These learners deserve the opportunity to get an education but learning with an empty stomach is no easy task. By partnering with Sunbake, we hope to meet but one of the many needs that these children have,” concludes Botes.

Carrus has been in partnership with Sunbake for five years, working to meet the needs of Sunbake as its operations grow.

Over the last four months (August to November 2010) Carrus has increased its staff complement at Sunbake by 30%, taking it to a total of 120 Carrus employees at Sunbake’s Pretoria Head Office.

Pieter Botes, Operations Manager at Carrus Ukhozi, says Sunbake requested additional assistance with some of its new contracts so Carrus agreed to provide the manpower and expertise. “We provide assistance at the receiving and dispatch areas as well as in logistics,” he says.

Botes adds that the year ahead looks to be an exciting one for Carrus and Sunbake with some new ventures in the pipeline.

Alexandra Bread Distribution

This initiative distributes bread to the destitute within Alexandra township. We provide a delivery vehicle and employ a driver who collects bread from Sunbake Bakery, one of our longstanding clients and delivers it to a hungry community in Alexandra. The driver and vehicle are also available to transport frail community members to the local clinic. We decided to support this initiative because it makes a difference to people at grass root level as is evidenced by the photograph.

Carrus Cares revamps Laerskool Bredell

It was time for an extreme makeover for Lareskool Bredell on 21 August. The Carrus Cares team arrived with 16 enthusiastic Carrus members and four partners, all intent on helping to make the school a better learning environment for its students.

The team quickly got stuck in giving the walls, doors, window frames and ceiling a fresh coat of paint. All the paint was generously sponsored by Dulux. Once this was done, they hung new curtains and tidied up the classroom and aftercare centre. An electrician, Johan O Neil, also generously gave up his time to assist on the day and charged Carrus cost price for the materials he used to correct the school’s electrics.

Lastly the Carrus team installed a TV set complete with a DVD player sponsored by Vodacom and brought in a bed, sponsored by Kenway, for the sickroom.

Dean Higgs, Sales Manager at Carrus, says the team had a great time while making a difference. “All the hard work felt worth it when we saw the finished product and received a call from the principal, thanking us for the effort we put in,” he says.

Dean even took a few minutes to put together a poem which he sent to the team that captures the spirit of the day.
